In 1978, a young woman stepped into St. Michael’s High School in Patna, Bihar, to teach her first-ever class. Faced with a lively group of boys, she questioned her decision to become a teacher. “How will I ever manage a class?” she wondered. Doubt crept in, making her reconsider her choice.

Father Harland, the school’s Principal and a Jesuit priest, saw her potential and reassured her. “Don’t worry, you can do this. Remember, teaching is all about keeping students happy,” he said before sending her off to her class.

That single word, ‘happy,’ transformed her perspective. The teacher, Ms. Gowri Ishwaran, discovered her passion for creating classrooms that inspired, nurtured, and uplifted students. Under her influence, St. Michael’s High School became known not just for academic and extracurricular success but for fostering happy students who grew up to be dreamers and achievers.

Over four decades later, three former ‘boisterous’ boys from Ms. Ishwaran’s very first class—Pramath Raj Sinha, Amit Prakash, and Nikesh Sinha—decided to carry her legacy forward by founding Delhi Public School (DPS) Gurugram. Their vision was inspired by the values instilled in them by their beloved teacher, who now serves as a mentor for the school.

With Pramath and Amit’s expertise in building premier educational institutions and Nikesh’s strategic insights, the trio created a forward-thinking, future-ready institution that prioritizes the holistic development of students. DPS Gurugram embodies the philosophy of nurturing the Whole Child while striving to create happy, well-rounded individuals—an enduring tribute to the wisdom imparted by Father Harland all those years ago.
