Situated on the bank of sacred Ganges, amidst mountains and woods in the Yoga Capital of world-Rishikesh, All India Institute of Medical Sciences aims to serve country by imparting knowledge, providing excellent health-care at affordable cost and investing in the area of medical research. AIIMS Rishikesh was established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna’s first phase and supported to be an autonomous body by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012. Going with the mandate of Government of India, institute is fostering not only allopathy, but also the Indian methods- AYUSH.

Institute follows the globally prevailing principles of education and focuses on development of skills and conceptual knowledge among its students. To achieve the same, institute has adopted newer methods of learning even at undergraduate level that pursue student as a life-long active learner. Contemporary facilities like virtual dissection, skill-laboratory have been made available to the students. Moreover, examination system has been transformed to provide more weightage to formative assessment. Further, institute encourages students to learn from masters from other institutes as well. Hence, many of the departments run collaborative academic programs within the departments of institute as well as organizations of national and global importance. Institute presently runs a wide variety of courses for the students starting from graduation (MBBS, BSc) to super-specialty trainings (DM, MCh, Post-doctoral Fellowships and Post-Doctoral Certificate Courses) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
